African and African American Studies is an interdisciplinary minor that examines the lives and experiences of African Americans in literature, art, music, history, sociology, political science, criminal justice and various social, behavioral as well as natural sciences.

Students choosing the African American Studies minor can expect to:

• To develop an understanding of the plight of African people in America and throughout the Diaspora.
• To examine the theoretical perspectives of the African American experience in America and its psychological, economic, social and political impact on African Americans development.
• To develop critical thinking skills and enhanced objectivity on consequences and issues pertaining to race and racism.
• To understand the impact of race on culture and assess how race is portrayed and manifested throughout institutions in society and popular culture.

African American Studies offers courses that examine the experiences and plight of African Americans across various disciplines including African History, Black Male/Famale Relationships, Black Music/Art/Mass Media, Black English/Literature, Criminal Justice, Political Science, Black Psychology and Black Religion.
