Child and Family Studies

Facing the challenges of everyday life takes real courage. The Child and Family Studies program prepares students to help people cope with complex life situations. The program combines coursework and classroom activity with compelling and vivid hands-on experience in the UL Lafayette Nursery School Lab. In addition, the student's individually designed internship opportunity (in various social agency settings or community-based programs) integrates the preparation sequence into a cohesive whole program. Graduates are ready to work for an entry-level position in a helping agency or to continue on to graduate work in the behavioral sciences, such as criminal justice, psychology, social work, or related fields.

Based upon individual career goals and special interests, each student will select a minor to complement the Child and Family Studies Major. In addition, a special feature of the program is the graduate's opportunity to apply for a Provisional Certified Family Life Educator credential from the National Council on Family Relations.

Students selecting a career as a Child Family Studies professional should:
  • Like and respect people
  • Be open-minded
  • Be a good listener
  • Be an effective communicator
  • Have a good self concept
Childe and Family Studies graduates are achieving success in many settings, such as:
  • Addiction Treatment Facilities
  • Child and Family Advocacy Organizations
  • Child Care Industry
  • Community Programs for Children and Youth
  • Cooperative Extension
  • Crisis Centers and Shelters
  • Elderly Services
  • Grief Programs
  • Hospice Programs
  • Hospital Settings
  • Parent Education Centers
  • Public and Private Social Agencies
  • Government Programs
  • Volunteer Agencies
