LGBT Studies Minor Courses

Below is information regarding the courses that fulfill the requirements for the LGBT Studies minor.


All students using these course to fulfill the requirements for the LGBT Studies Minor must complete the contract which can be downloaded HERE


To complete the eighteen (18) credit-hour interdisciplinary minor in LGBT Cultural Studies, the following two (2) courses are required totaling six (6) credit hours:


SOCI 354 - INTRODUCTION TO LGBT CULTURAL STUDIES. (3cr);  Interdisciplinary approach to scientific study of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered people; examination of sexuality and gender as categories for investigation; theories and research on minority sexualities and genders: prerequisite ENGL 102 or 115


SOCI 454(G) - Gender Across Cultures. {Same as ANTH 454 (G)}(3 cr.); Application of social definitions of appropriate and inappropriate thought, feeling, behavior, and appearance on various gender categories. Emphasis on multiple cultures and contexts.  prerequisite ANTH 201 or SOCI 100 or SOCI 354 or IP (Instructor Permission)*


Students must take any additional four (4) of the following courses for an additional twelve (12) credit hours.  Students should contact the course instructor and the minor coordinator for course by contract opportunities in the following disciplines:  ANTH, CAFS, CMCN, CJUS, DANC, ENGL, HIST, HONR, HUMN, PHIL, POLS, PSYCH, SOCI, THEA, VIAR.  For each course, the student must contract with the individual instructor to provide assignments that meet the requirements of the minor and the course, and receive approval of the department head.

NOTES:  At least six (6) hours of credit toward the minor must be at the 300-400 level.

A student must inform his or her advisor of the intent to complete requirements for a minor no later than at the completion of the degree plan.  The student's dean has final approval of the student's choice of minor.
