Student-Led Support for the Unhoused

In a powerful display of community partnership, students and faculty have joined forces to provide essential support for neighbors facing financial insecurity and housing instability.

The Sociology Club, The Student Wellness Collective, and Ms. Shantija Francis’s Sociology 494: Homelessness in America class recently collaborated to assemble 50 cinch bags packed with essential hygiene items, warm socks, and vital resource information.

These supplies are being distributed directly to those in need through our dedicated community resources here in Lafayette.  Heartland Recovery, a recovery treatment center, through supporting individuals through their Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Program.  Harm Reduction Hotties and Acadiana Harm Reduction which provides direct outreach and support for the unhoused population.

This initiative would not have been possible without the dedication of those who coordinated the efforts: A sincere thank you to Denaecia Lewis and Brianna Mills (representing both the Sociology Club and The Student Wellness Collective) for their tireless work in organizing this collaboration. A huge thank you to Ms. Shantija Francis and her Sociology 494 students, whose hands-on effort in packing these bags made the distribution possible. And to Kristen Kahanek for assistance in organizing and delivering the bags. From fundraising efforts to fund the projects, to the acquisition of items and packaging, to delivery of them, this was a true community effort to help those in need.  We are grateful for the partnership and logistical support provided by Josh from Heartland Recovery, Kady from Acadiana Harm Reduction, and Jay from Harm Reduction Hotties.

Thank you to everyone involved for turning classroom learning into tangible, compassionate action.
