From September 29 to October 17, the Boys and Girls Club, at the Jackie Unit, specifically the Torch and the Keystone Clubs, ran a Hygiene Drive benefiting students in need at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
This impactful collaboration was led as a service-learning project by Kiara McWain, a UL Lafayette Senior Sociology Major completing her internship with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana. The collaboration did more than just collect donations, it provided an invaluable service-learning experience.
Through their involvement, Boys & Girls Club members gained real-world skills in community engagement, leadership, and social awareness, learning firsthand how small acts of kindness foster compassion and civic responsibility. Kiara is set to continue her relationship with the Boys & Girls Club following the completion of her internship.
The effort is continuing for the rest of the month! All Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana locations across multiple parishes are extending the collection period, including: Acadia, Calcasieu, Iberia, Lafayette, Natchitoches, St. Landry, and Vermilion. These additional items will be picked up at the end of October to further bolster the Student Wellness Collective’s supply. This project stands as an excellent example of how universities and youth organizations can collaborate to create meaningful service that benefits the larger community.
Thank you to everyone who has donated and continues to support this initiative!
